Summary

The Wheedle has lived on the Needle for more than thirty years. His earmuffs tightly clamped on his head, he has been slumbering in peace without interruption. All would have stayed the same but for a sad mewling sound echoing through the night. Now the Wheedle has been rudely awoken from a sound sleep. What is that sound that now threatens the peace negotiated years ago? Awake and ready to bring year-round rain back on the kindly folds of Seattle, he begins his search for the sound. And that's how the Wheedle met the cat called Noodle.

Author Notes

Stephen Cosgrove and Robin James collaborated on the 60-plus titles that comprise the Serendipity Books series, including such classics as Serendipity, Flutterby, Morgan and Me, and Leo the Lop.

Stephen Cosgrove's career has spanned more than 35 years with over 300 children's books and 30 young adult novels. Born and raised in Washington State, he now lives in Austin, TX, where he continues his writing career.

Robin James has illustrated more than 75 books, including all of the titles in the much-loved Serendipity series. A native of the Pacific Northwest, she lives with her husband in Snohomish, WA.

Gr 1-2-As legend has it, the Wheedle, a creature with a red, blinking nose, lives atop Seattle's Space Needle. The usually grumpy creature meets a lost kitten, Noodle, who is looking for a home. Ultimately the notoriously solitary Wheedle learns to share his life and his Needle with the abandoned pet. A sweet story with an obvious moral wrapped up neatly at the end, the book will appeal to adults familiar with the Wheedle story from more than 20 years ago. Bright illustrations give the characters texture and life, making them both look soft enough to pet. The story itself, though, is slightly long-winded for what is a simple, gentle story of friendship.
