Summary

Hannah's mother, Delores, is outraged. The Swensen women are the butt of a joke by a news reporter about how long it has been since one of the Swensen ladies have found a body. While the daughters are taking the joke in stride, Delores is not. Hannah is not worried- it feels like ages since she found her last body- and with all the things going on (planning Delores's wedding to Doc, running The Cookie Jar, cuddling up with Moishe and trying to decide between Mike and Norman), Hannah is ok with not finding any bodies.

One day, a dark and stormy day, Lisa, Hannah's partner at The Cookie Jar, needs to be picked up from the car repair shop. Hannah goes and gets Lisa- worrying about the weather and decides to take the back roads back to town. The weather is terrible and Hannah is worried that if she pulls over, no one would see her and hit her. When Hannah swerves to avoid a large limb, she doesn't see the man near the side of the road. Overcome with guilt (Hannah's used to finding dead bodies, not causing them), but knowing that it was an accident- Hannah does not know what will happen next. Will she be arrested?

Author Notes

Joanne Fluke was born in Swanville, Minnesota in 1943. While pursuing her writing career, she worked as a public school teacher, a psychologist, a musician, a private detective's assistant, a secretary, a short order cook, a florist's assistant, a caterer and party planner, a computer consultant, a production assistant on a TV quiz show, and half of a screenwriting team with her husband.

She writes the Hannah Swensen Mystery series which includes original family recipes for baking. Her other works include The Stepchild, Vengeance Is Mine, Video Kill, Dead Giveaway, and Deadly Memories. In 2014, her title's Blackberry Pie Murder and Double Fudge Brownie Murder made The New York Times Best Seller List.

Veteran narrator Toren draws on her special gift for dialogue in the audio edition of the latest installment in Fluke's popular series describing the adventures of Hannah Swensen, a smalltown Minnesota baker/sleuth. Toren does an effective job of moving the often over-the-top events along, but the highlight is her ability to capture the nuances of individual characters and the speech patterns and flavor of the region. Her turn as Hannah's high-strung and high-maintenance mother certainly delivers palpable energy and enthusiasm, whether she's fretting over the details of her upcoming wedding or visiting Minneapolis with her daughter to solve the sordid prostitution case at the heart of the story. Toren even takes pains to voice the distinctive meows of Hannah's cat. She also handles the recipe segments at the end of each chapter with a pleasant conversational tone. A Kensington hardcover. Fluke adds another cliff-hanger installment to Hannah Swensen's adventures (after Red Velvet Cupcake Murder). Here, Hannah is responsible for the vehicular manslaughter of a John Doe. The man was lying half dead in the road during a storm when Hannah ran over him. Horrified, she wants to know everything about him, particularly why he was in Lake Eden. Meanwhile, a friend of Michelle's is in another sticky situation. The friend's long-lost sister has just returned, but she doesn't pass the smell test. Is there a connection between John Doe and the "sister"? While Hannah wraps up the mysteries neatly, her own case is not so easily dismissed. She killed a man, and she's going to have to face the consequences. Suzanne Toren infuses the requisite drama and humor into the quirky characters, but at this point the recipes would be better served by a pdf rather than a reading.
