Author Notes

JIM AYLESWORTH was a teacher for 25 years before he decided to write and visit schools full time. He has published over 25 picture books, and currently lives in Chicago with his wife.

MICHAEL HAGUE has illustrated classics such as, The Wizard of Oz and the stories of Hans Christian Anderson. He is renowned for the intricate and realistic detail he brings to his work, and the rich colors he chooses. He lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, with his wife Kathleen.

PreS-Gr 1-Aylesworth and Hague steamroll the alphabet-book competition with this rhyming adventure. Realistically drawn but purple-frocked Little Bitty Mousie explores a human home, from a bowl full of apples to the Zs of a snoring cat. The text stays on the right side of sweet, and storyhour audiences will connect with the quarterly refrain, "Tip-tip tippy tippy/Went her little mousie toes./Sniff-sniff sniffy sniffy/Went her little mousie nose." Hague's pencil illustrations, vibrantly colored in Photoshop, offer a three-dimensional effect that enhances the fantasy-meets-reality mood. Mousie's expressions range from bliss among the roses to slight distaste over pepper. The "lady's Lipstick" page is classic. It's nighttime, the coast is clear-the perfect opportunity for Little Bitty Mousie to explore, in alphabetical order, all the delights of a human household: "She climbed the dirty Dishes/ That at dinner held some stew./ She sniffed into an Eggshell,/ But she found it hard to chew." Every four letters, Aylesworth (Old Black Fly) offers up a catchy refrain tailor-made to elicit audience participation: "Tip-tip tippy tippy/ Went her little mousie toes./ Sniff-sniff sniffy sniffy/ Went her little mousie nose." Hague's (The Tale of Peter Rabbit) digitized drawings combine a traditional storybook aesthetic with the vividness of photorealism, and a tall format allows for large-scale renderings. Mousie, with her winsome rodent face and her ankle-length polka-dotted pinafore, would be very much at home in a vintage English picture book, while many of the things she tastes or scampers over have an almost palpably physical presence.
