Cornelius P. Mud, are you ready for baby?

There's a new baby in the house. Is Cornelius P. Mud ready? Not really! The baby may be getting all the attention, but he isn't very much fun. He can't talk. He can't eat. He can't play. Can they send him back? Does Mom love the baby best? Of course, fans of Cornelius know that even the arrival of a sibling won't get this resourceful little piggy down for long. When he trots out his good humor -- and his gift for entertainment -- he soon discovers that the new arrival can do something very special indeed.

Author Notes

Barney Saltzberg was born in Los Angeles, California. He fell in love with drawing at an early age, encouraged primarily by his mother, who bought him drawing pads instead of coloring books so he could create his own art. Barney went on to study art at Sonoma State College in Northern California.

Barney moved back to Los Angeles in the late 1970's and took a class at Otis/Parsons in children's book writing and illustration. His first published children's book, It Must Have Been the Wind, came out of that class. He now has published close to thirty books.

Saltzberg carries around a sketchbook and is constantly doodling and writing things down. In addition to writing and illustrating children's books he has recorded two albums for children. Where, Oh, Where's My Underwear? and most recently The Soccer Mom From Outer Space! He has also written and produced songs for the PBS show, Arthur.

PreS-Gr 1-In his third picture-book outing, Cornelius P. Mud faces his biggest challenge yet: meeting his new baby brother. Like its predecessors, the book has a series of questions and answers, only this time Cornelius is the one asking the questions: "Can he play?" "Can he eat pizza?" "What CAN he do?" His sensitive mama answers all of them with love and patience. Saltzberg's delightfully childlike acrylic and pencil illustrations capture the trepidation of a youngster confronted with such a situation; Cornelius curls up in a corner of the room, as far from his mother and brother as possible, as he asks, "Do you love him more than you love me?," and his expression is the epitome of woe as he moans, "I wish we could send him back." At last he finds something the baby can do-be his little brother. Young readers will delight at Cornelius's "lullaby" for his new sibling: "When you're/a little older,/we will play./BUT NOW/you're like a/lump of clay."
