School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1-This installment in the series features the saucy black canine going to camp. Gaspard wants to learn to windsurf, but he can't swim. En route to camp, he fibs about being a champion swimmer. Chunky brush strokes in primary hues portray the pup at play with human pals; his cohort, Lisa, appears only in a dream in which he realizes his ambition. The ending, which depicts Gaspard afloat in an inner tube behind a windsurfer, gives yet another reason to smile: "-I bet the kids who already knew how to swim were jealous-because my ring looked like a shark!" Gutman successfully shows how a little lie escalates, and how to save face gracefully with the truth.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA (c) Copyright 2010.
