PreS-Gr 1-The charming star of two previous books returns, and this time he can't fall asleep. Copycub wiggles and wriggles until he wakes up his mother who, as always, has a solution. She tells him a story in which the two of them walk past three sleeping animals-a goose, a moose, and a hare-and encourages her son to do what he loves best: mimic their behavior. He does so and at last falls asleep. This simple tale is made all the more wonderful by Winter's soft watercolors. One particularly imaginative spread shows the little cub aping each of the other animals using a prop-a feather for a wing, a stick for antlers, and a long floppy leaf for an ear. The fact that he imagines the lovely moonlit walk with his mother passes on to children the idea that they can use their minds to travel or to pretend to be someone else. Use this book with Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon (HarperCollins, 1947) and Audrey Wood's The Napping House (Harcourt, 1984) for a sweet-dream inducing storyhour program.-Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT (c) Copyright 2010.
