A million or more years ago, during the Ice Age, Australia was home to a wide range of extraordinary giant animals. None was quite as bizarre or fearsome as Thylacoleo, the meat-eating marsupial lion. Pound for pound, this creature had the most powerful bite of any mammal, living or extinct. Even though it was at the top of the ancient Australian predators, Thylacoleo was eventually toppled from its throne, dying out along with all the rest of the outsized beasts.

Summary

As originally screened on the Boston PBS affiliate WGBH, the archaeologically-tinged documentary special NOVA: Bone Diggers travels back in time millions of years to the Ice Age, when massive, deadly marsupials roamed the continent of Australia. In an era whose denizens included 8-foot-tall kangaroos and 3-feet-in-diameter reptiles, the most fearsome creature of all was the Thylacoleo - a carnivorous marsupial lion. Eventually, for mysterious and unknown reasons, the entire population of this creature died off. Bone Diggers joins a group of thrill-seeking archeologists who undertake a courageous foray into an Australasian cave, in search of a rare skeleton of the Thylacoleo and answers to their queries about the reasons for its extinction. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
