In April 2002, Garrison Keillor gave three live performances at the Yale Repertory Theatre, reading from a variety of his published and unpublished stories, novels, and essays. The award-winning radio personality and man behind the Lake Wobegon phenomenon presented his original musings on the life and times in which we live. Presenting one man, one mike, and a captive audience of fans both old and new, this audio recording captures the intimacy and the hilarity of those special performances.

Summary

On three consecutive Monday evenings in April 2002, humorist Garrison Keillor appeared on stage at Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut. Performing before sold-out crowds, he read personally chosen favorite selections from his many works, both published and unpublished: stories from The New Yorker, chapters from his bestselling novels, news from Lake Wobegon, essays from Time magazine, letters, and even a few pretty good poems.

Author Notes

Humorist Garrison Keillor was born Gary Edward Keillor in Anoka, Minnesota on August 7, 1942. He began using the pen name Garrison at the age of thirteen. He received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1966 and paid for his tuition by working at the campus radio station.

In 1974, he wrote an essay for the New Yorker about the Grand Ole Opry, which led to his live radio program, A Prairie Home Companion. Stories from Prairie Home were collected and published, but his debut as a novelist was in 1985 with Lake Wobegon Days. His other novels include WLT: A Radio Romance, The Book of Guys, Wobegon Boy, Me by Jimmy (Big Boy) Valente, and Good Poems, American Places.

He has also written the children's books Cat, You Better Come Home, The Old Man Who Loved Cheese, and The Sandy Bottom Orchestra. He won a Grammy Award for his recording of Lake Wobegon Days and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1994. Keillor received a National Humanities Medal from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1999. In September 2007, Keillor was awarded the John Steinbeck Award.

Keillor is a true storyteller in the vein of Mark Twain and Paul Harvey. His humor comes from his simplicity of style; his views on life are wry, sometimes verging on sadness, but always ending with an expression of love for the life he has led. He will have you laughing at his comments on such things as Total Quality Management (those of us who worked for the government will especially appreciate his observations on this particular topic), Episcopalians (with one of the funniest song parodies on "Ain't Misbehavin'" you've ever heard), and the midlife crisis of the god Dionysus, among other subjects. Keillor will make you laugh without wincing and will help you look at the everyday challenges of life in a completely different way.
