Author Notes

Rachel Renée Russell grew up in Saint Joseph, Michigan. She was born on December 11, 1965. She is an attorney who also writes children's books. She writes and illustrates the Dork Diaries series. Rachel wrote her first book in 6th grade as a birthday present for her younger twin brothers. Dork Diaries dramatically chronicles the daily life of the main character, Nikki Maxwell, as she struggles to fit in and survive middle school. The book series is written in a diary format and includes doodles, drawings and comic strips. According to the author's website, the Dork Diaries books are based on Rachel Renee Russell's experiences in middle school, as well as those of her two daughters, Erin and Nikki. Her older daughter, Erin, helps with writing and her younger daughter, Nikki, helps with illustrations. The main character, Nikki Maxwell, is named after her daughter.

Currently, there are over 10 million copies of the Dork Diaries books in print in the United States. Publishing rights have been sold in 36 countries with translation into 32 different languages. Dork Diaries was awarded the 2010 Children's Choice Book of the Year Award for the 5th/6th grade division. She made The New York Times Best Seller List iwith her title OMG!:All about Me Diary! and her title Dork Diaries. The latest in the series is book 11, Frenemies Forever.

Gr 5-8-Nikki Maxwell, self-professed dork and aspiring artist, has plenty of problems starting at a brand new private middle school in this tale (Aladdin, 2009) by Rachel Renee Russell. Her locker is right next to MacKenzie, the queen of mean girls; she can hardly speak around her crush Brandon; and she is desperate to hide the fact that she is attending on scholarship because her father is the school's exterminator. Chronicling her middle school highs and lows in a diary, Nikki includes all the humorous as well as embarrassing details. Lana Quintal is well-cast to voice the first title in this popular series. Her youthful voice is a match for Nikki's personality, providing authenticity for her observations and emotions. Her tone is appropriately cliched for MacKenzie, Nikki's nemesis and the most popular girl in school. Listeners will laugh even as they identify with Nikki's insecurities and her struggles to fit. FRIDAY, AT HOME, 6:05 A.M. OMG!! I just had the most HORRIFIC nightmare! The worst in my entire life! I'm soooo FREAKED OUT I can barely write this. I'm having cold sweats, my heart is pounding, and my brain is … numb with such intense … anguish it feels like it's about to, um … EXPLODE! WHY?! I DREAMED I LOST MY DIARY AT SCHOOL ?!!!!!! YES!! At SCHOOL!! Like, how CRAZY is THAT?! The weird thing is that it seems like it actually happened.
