Julie and her best friend, Ivy, find a baby owl in Golden Gate Park - and it needs help. At a wildlife rescue center, Julie meets Shasta and Sierra, two bald eagles that will be caged for life, unless money is raised to release them back into the wild. For Earth Day, Julie thinks of a unique way to tell the public of the eagles' plight. The "Looking Back" section explores the beginning of the environmental movement.

Author Notes

Megan McDonald was born February 28, 1959, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She grew up in the 1960s the youngest of five girls - which later became the inspiration of the Sister's Club. She attended Oberlin College and received a B.A. in English, then she went on to receive a Library Science degree at Pittsburgh University in 1986. Before becoming a full-time writer, McDonald had a variety of jobs working in libraries, bookstores, museums, and even as a park ranger.She was children's librarian, working at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Minneapolis Public Library and Adams Memorial Library in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. She has received various awards for her storytelling including a Judy Blume Contemporary Fiction Award, a Children's Choice Book award, and a Keystone State Award among others. McDonald has also written many picture books for younger children and continues to write. Her most recent work was the "Julie Albright" series of books for the American public. She currently resides in Sebastopol, California with her husband and pets.

School Library Journal Review

Gr 2-5-McDonald does an excellent job of developing characters who reflect the 1970s, and keeping the action moving. In Changes, fifth-grader Julie has a new friend, who is deaf, and she runs for school president. In the second title, she takes a baby owl to a wildlife rescue center where she encounters bald eaglets and learns that these birds are an endangered species. In Journey, Julie joins her cousins on a wagon train in Pennsylvania, re-creating the pioneer journey in a Bicentennial celebration and collecting signatures to present to President Ford. Each book has occasional full-page paintings as well as spot art. Back matter includes historical facts and photographs pertaining to the events mentioned, such as DDT, inclusion for disabled people, and presidential elections.
