There's nothing like a visit at Grandma's--sleeping in her big, comfy bed, eating yummy cinnamon bread, taking trips in the red canoe, listening to the rain, and watching fireflies at night. At Grandma's house, there is always so much to do and share--from morning to night, it's just the right place to be.
Author Notes
Rhonda Gowler Greene has fond memories of being at her grandma's. She remembers driving a tractor, climbing huge trees, and catching lots of fireflies. Ms. Greene is the author of Barnyard Song and The Stable Where Jesus Was Born . A former preschool and elementary teacher, she lives in West Bloomfield, Michigan, with her family.
Karla Firehammer enjoyed working on this book as it brought back memories shared with her grandmother, gardening and baking raspberry pie and cinnamon muffins. Ms. Firehammer has illustrated several books for young readers, including The Flea's Sneeze, If the Shoe Fits, and From the Doghouse: Poems to Chew On , for which she helped create intricate, hand-beaded illustrations. She lives in Lenexa, Kansas, with her three dogs.

PreS-Gr 1-A grandma and her grandchild spend a day together in this bright, warm, and cheerful picture book. Greene's bouncy verse ("Overalls/Floppy hat/Bowl of cream for Grandma's cat-") swings readers along through a variety of experiences: berry picking, enjoying a picnic lunch, gardening, firefly counting, and sharing a bedtime story. Firehammer's characters are sweet, floppy-eared dogs but their postures are human and familiar. Balancing soft tones of lilac, pink, mossy green, and buttery yellow against plenty of white space, the acrylic artwork is quiet and refreshing. Echoing the simplicity of the text, the illustrations include just enough interesting detail to feed a preschooler's imagination. Although there is nothing new about the book's intergenerational theme, the delightful combination of text and pictures gives it a fresh approach.-Liza Graybill, Worcester Public Library, MA (c) Copyright 2010. From morning ("Big bed/ Yellow sun/ Breakfast bread with cinnamon") to night ("Big bed/ Silver light/ Hug and kiss... to say good night"), a child's sleepover at grandma's house is sweetly rendered here. Firehammer's (The Flea's Sneeze) country hound-dog grandma may bake muffins and keep a cozy house, but she also wears sturdy overalls, can paddle a canoe and knows how to wield a hammer. The countryside is a harmony of muted, soft-edged colors, with rolling gumdrop hills and sunflowers as big as dinner plates, but the overall effect is tender rather than cloying. Greene's (Barnyard Song) three-line-per-page text offers haiku-like glimpses of various settings ("Wooden bridge/ White-cloud sky/ Cattails and a butterfly") as the genderless child and grandmother pick berries, have a picnic, watch fireflies and wear matching "bunny slippers on four feet." The fondness the two share as they potter about bathes both text and illustrations in "golden light," like the "noodle soup that tastes just right."
