We Are Artists celebrates the life and work of 15 female artists from around the globe and the distinctive mark they made on the art world and beyond. Presented as a collection of engaging biographical narratives, We Are Artists reveals how each artist's unique approach and perspective provided the art world and society at large with a new way of seeing things. It places the spotlight on women painters, sculptors, printmakers, illustrators, designers and craftswomen, who all too often are left out of history and art history books for children. Through their personal stories, readers will come to know the circles and art movements each artist worked in, and the influence they exerted on both the art world and society as a whole.

Author Notes

Kari Herbert is an author, illustrator, and speaker. Her father was polar explorer Sir Wally Herbert, and she grew up in Northwest Greenland with a remote tribe of Inuit. She has written six books on exploration, women's history, and visual culture. She is the author and illustrator of We Are Artists and coauthor, with Huw Lewis-Jones, of the bestselling Explorers' Sketchbooks.

Including names familiar--Kahlo, Kusama--and less widely known--Ashevak, Kngwarreye, Sher-Gil--this engaging introduction to the art and lives of 15 women active in the 20th century spans cultures, continents, and mediums. Each artist is given a dedicated chapter, marked by Herbert's colorful portraits. A single page of fiction sets the scene--"It was the first time she had... seen paper from the outside world. 'It's as thin as a shell from a snowbird's egg,' she thought"--segueing into a short biography punctuated with Herbert's pictures and artists' reproductions. The clear, informative prose is sensitive and forthright about challenges the women faced: "Back in 1950s Finland, for a woman to love another woman was illegal. But on the islands... they could live and love as they wanted." Page by page, these stories coalesce into a rich portrait showing women around the world making art against the odds. Ages 9--12.
