In 1517, a young monk in Germany posted a challenge to Roman Catholic orthodoxy that, through a confluence of social and political circumstances, altered the landscape of Renaissance Europe and ultimately changed the world. That monk, Martin Luther, and his impact are here commemorated and celebrated. Relying heavily upon Luther's own letters and texts, the book outlines the doubts and convictions driving the man and explores the social and religious framework of his time.
