School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1-In a series of quiet vignettes, a piglet prepares for and enjoys a day at the beach. Each spread features a free-verse poem with Pig Little's childlike interpretation of an experience. On the way, he controls the car with the window knob, but lets "-his mom think/that she was doing/all the driving." When they arrive, he stands in the water, appreciating the way the waves splash his feet whenever he asks them to. At lunchtime, his peanut-butter sandwich is "-more SAND/than/WICH," and although he licks his ice-cream cone quickly, the sun licks it too, and he decides "that they/would just/share it." At the end of the day, he worries that the ocean might quench the setting sun. When he is tucked into bed, he decides to enumerate moons rather than stars because he can only count to six. The lush watercolor-and-pencil illustrations feature the bristly porcine family enjoying their outing. Children will appreciate the little pig's oh-so-true-to-life behaviors and child-centric view of the world and will recognize themselves in the warm verse and illustrations. A wonderful choice for family sharing.-Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha Public Library, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
