In FitzSimmons's fast-paced fourth adventure for computer hacker Gibson Vaughn, Gibson, who spent 18 months as a prisoner at a CIA black site in 2017's Cold Harbor, and two fellow fugitives, Jenn Charles and Dan Hendricks, have been hiding out in Albufeira, Portugal, under the protection of Baltasar Alves, a powerful criminal kingpin who smuggles drugs for a Mexican cartel. When a shipment of drugs is hijacked, Baltasar fears the Mexicans will kill him unless he retrieves the stolen shipment fast. Gibson and his colleagues have little choice but to try to help. Meanwhile, Gibson inadvertently uncovers a criminal plot being perpetrated by someone in Baltasar's network, the outcome of which he feels honor bound to forestall, even though doing so will complicate matters with Baltasar. Dynastic infighting among Baltasar's three lieutenants, his niece, and his son threatens to further compromise Gibson's mission.
