Author Notes

Phllis Root is the author of over forty books, almost all of them picture books, both fiction and non-fiction. Her middle grade novel, Lilly and the Pirates, is currently under contract. Aunt Nancy and Old Man Trouble won the Minnesota Book Award, and Big Momma Makes the World won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award. Root was awarded a 2006 McKnight Fellowship for her book, Lucia and the Light. She has taught at the Loft, in the Complete and Practical Scholar program at the University of Minnesota, and in Vermont College's MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults program.

PreS-K-Despite the subtitle, this book is not just for babies. It's a charming and entertaining easy reader as well. The acrylic illustrations are done in a pastel, springtime palette with soft edges that give the animals and their scenery a happy and safe feeling. The book opens with mother bird teaching her baby to fly "...in the blue, blue sky,/where the wind blows whish./'Look!' cheeps the baby bird./'I see a.../FISH!'" The fish sees a baby snake, the snake sees an otter, and so on. At the end, a baby mouse spots a human child, and all of the youngsters gather around a pond as the toddler exclaims, "Babies everywhere!" This is a sweet book that has a rhythm reminiscent of "Over in the Meadow." The text flows easily from scene to scene, and as each baby is discovered, children can call out the rhyming name, which adds to the level of interaction.-Kate Neff, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
