Author Notes

Christopher Cardozo is the author of a portfolio of Edward S. Curtis gravures, "Native Nations," as well as four other titles on the subject. Recognized as one of the worlds leading authorities on the work of Curtis, he is the principal curator & consultant to the four major private Curtis collections. Trained as both a lawyer & a photographer, he directs two galleries of nineteenth- & twentieth-century fine arts photography, one in Minneapolis & the other in Aspen, Colorado.

This gorgeous book, accompanying an exhibition of the same name organized by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, celebrates the late 19th- and early 20th-century photographer Edward S. Curtis, whose portraits of Native Americans helped garner respect for a people largely disdained at that time in this country. Although reproductions of Curtis's portraits and ethnographic studies are widely available, this title showcases something quite special: his master prints, exquisite photographic items made for exhibition or sale, as distinct from the photogravure prints intended for publication that lacked the depth of the fine darkroom creations. This title succeeds at bringing the reader close to what it's like to view the artist's master prints in person. Excellent essays by -Curtis expert Cardozo and historian, critic, and curator of photography A.D. Coleman discuss both Curtis's work and his printmaking technique. Other essays address his portrayal of women and his images in relation to environmentalism. The reproductions, on beautiful cream-colored stock, approach the depth and dimension of a fine photographic print.
